Standard Chartered Pakistan delivers a record operating profit

   

Standard Chartered Bank Pakistan delivered a record profit before tax of PKR 63.0 billion for the nine months period ended 30 September 2023, registering an increase of 73 per cent year on year. Profit after tax grew by 121% year on year to PKR 31.4 billion during nine months of the year. The performance was driven by strong income growth, as well as continued cost and risk discipline.

Overall revenue for the Bank grew by 70 per cent to deliver a top-line of PKR 76.9 billion, with positive contribution from all segments. The Net Interest Income for Standard Chartered witnessed a strong growth of 131% year on year, driven by proactive balance sheet management, pricing discipline and higher interest rates. Operating expenses increased 27 per cent from comparative period, in line with inflation. Moreover, lower impairments as a result of prudent risk approach coupled with recoveries of bad debts led to a benign charge of PKR 615 million for the period.

With a diversified product base, the Bank stands well positioned to cater to the needs of its clients. On the liabilities side, the Bank’s total deposits stand at PKR 725 billion. Current accounts registered strong growth of PKR 68 billion (up 21 per cent) from start of the year. On assets side, net advances registered a growth of PKR 18 billion (up 9 per cent) since the start of this year.

With a strong Return on Equity (ROE) of 46.3% for the period and a Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 20.4%, the Bank remains well positioned for future growth. On the back of a strong performance, the Board of Directors were pleased to announce an interim cash dividend of 25.0% (PKR 2.50/- per share) in respect of the nine months period ended September 30, 2023. This is in addition to 40.0% (PKR 4.00/- per share) interim cash dividend announced during half year ended June 30, 2023.

He told the audience that; Every 9th Pakistani woman is at high risk of Breast Cancer. However, they are reluctant to report the disease and cannot seek reliable treatment due to social taboos or lack of healthcare facilities. Milestone achieved: CBD Punjab to complete Lahore Prime’s infrastructural works next month

The Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA), also known as Central Business District Punjab (CBD Punjab), is about to complete all infrastructural development work, within the ambits of Lahore Prime in the month of October 2023.

Once completed, the local and foreign investors can initiate construction works on five mixed used commercial plots, already auctioned back in September 2021 at a price of Rs21.59 billion.

Lahore Prime is one of the main clusters of CBD Punjab, where world class skyscrapers will be constructed to provide superlative business opportunities for local and foreign conglomerates.

The authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Imran Amin visited the site to get the latest briefings on about-to-complete infrastructural projects in Lahore Prime. CBD Punjab’s Executive Director Commercial Mohammed Omer, Executive Director Technical Riaz Hussain, and other officials including technical teams from NESPAK and NLC were also present at the occasion.

The infrastructure encompasses wide-range road works with asphalt surfacing, a state-of-the-art drainage system, a robust sewage network, dependable water supply, natural gas connections, top-tier telecommunication services, enhanced security measures, and aesthetically pleasing landscaping, with an equal emphasis on keeping the cluster environmentally friendly through providing green spaces and large-scale plantation drive.

The pier work is now on the brink of completion, with four piers in total, one of which has recently undergone the final concrete pour, leaving only three remaining to be finalized. Furthermore, the successful completion of both abutment walls represents a significant milestone in the construction journey.

As the boundary wall nears completion, the initiation of slip road and drainage system construction demonstrates the project's comprehensive approach towards enhancing the region's overall infrastructure. Beware ethical dilemmas and greenwashing in sustainability reporting, warns ACCA

                                        


Latest research from ACCA examines the ethical dilemmas regularly faced by accountants and other professionals involved in implementing sustainability reporting.

 

Launched to mark Global Ethics Day the resulting guide, Ethical dilemmas in an era of sustainability reporting, identifies the risks around ethics and independence associated with sustainability reporting.

At a time when the regulatory requirements for sustainability reporting are growing, the guide provides real-world scenarios, written in partnership with academics from Warwick Business School, for accountants and non-accountants to equip them to manage dilemmas often presented by:

·         Risks of greenwashing

·         Weak processes

·         Lacking technical knowledge

·         Compromises in objectivity and independence.

Further practical support is provided through a checklist of questions to drive better application of the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants Code principles, including professional scepticism and curiosity. The guide aims to help users avoid consequences such as poor-quality reporting, including ‘greenwashing’, a loss of trust and faulty decision-making.

 

Report co-author Sharon Machado, head of sustainable business at ACCA, said: “We have a collective obligation to future generations to operate in a sustainable manner, both individually and as organisations, and it’s great to see more and more businesses embracing sustainability reporting.
